What is WeKan?
WeKan is a kanban board for teams that want Trello-style cards and lists on their own server. Beyond the classic board it offers swimlanes, table, calendar and Gantt views, Scrum tools and automation rules. It is free software under the MIT licence and sends no telemetry.
WeKan is an MIT-licensed kanban board application that you run on your own server. Teams organise cards in lists and swimlanes, see the same board as a table, calendar or Gantt chart, and automate card moves with if-this-then-that rules. It imports boards from Trello, Jira, Asana and many other tools.
Core capabilities
- Plan work in swimlanes and lists, or switch to table, calendar, Gantt and Scrum views.
- Automate card moves and updates with if-this-then-that rules, similar to Trello Butler.
- Import boards from Trello, Jira or Asana and export them to CSV, Excel, PDF or JSON.
Boards, views and automation
Cards sit in lists and swimlanes that you reorder by drag and drop, and each card can hold checklists, subtasks, custom fields, attachments and comments. The same board can be shown as a table, calendar, timeline or Gantt chart, and Scrum settings add a backlog, sprints, velocity and burndown charts. Rules work like if-this-then-that automation and can be edited as a list, a workflow or visual blocks.

Import, export and administration
Boards can be imported from Trello, Jira, Asana, Microsoft Planner, monday.com, Notion and many other tools, or from CSV, Excel and Markdown files, and exported to formats including PDF, Excel, CSV, JSON and an iCal feed. The Admin Panel covers people, organisations and teams, sign-in through LDAP, SAML or OAuth2, global webhooks, and attachment storage on the filesystem, S3 or MinIO, Azure Blob or Google Cloud.

Running it yourself and the licence
WeKan ships as a Windows, Mac and Linux bundle, a Snap with automatic updates, Docker images and a Kubernetes Helm chart. By default it stores data in FerretDB with SQLite, so no separate database server is needed; PostgreSQL and MongoDB 6 to 9 are also supported. The project asks for at least 4 GB of RAM on a production server, frequent updates and daily backups. The code is MIT licensed, and WeKan is a registered trademark in Finland.

Use cases
- 01
Move a team off Trello
Choose Add Board, then Import, and pick the Trello export to recreate the board in WeKan. Several export files, or a .zip of them, can be imported in one go, each becoming its own board.
- 02
Run sprints on a shared board
Turn on the Scrum settings to keep a product backlog and sprints on the board. Follow progress in the sprint report, velocity and burndown views, and review cycle time when the sprint ends.

Sign in with company accounts
In the Admin Panel, connect LDAP, SAML or an OAuth2 provider so staff log in with existing accounts, and group people into organisations and teams. Global webhooks and scheduled backups are set up from the same panel.
