What is Vaultwarden?
Vaultwarden lets a team run its own password manager without the weight of the official Bitwarden server. People keep using the Bitwarden apps they know, while the vault itself lives on a server the team controls.
Vaultwarden is an alternative server for the Bitwarden client API, written in Rust and compatible with the official Bitwarden apps and browser extensions. It suits self-hosting where the official server is too resource-heavy, and supports organisations, sharing, Send and two-factor login.
Core capabilities
- Use the official Bitwarden apps and browser extensions with your own lightweight server.
- Share passwords in organisations with collections, groups, roles and policies.
- Protect accounts with authenticator apps, email, FIDO2 WebAuthn, YubiKey or Duo.
Personal vaults and team sharing
A nearly complete implementation of the Bitwarden client API covers personal vaults, Send, attachments, website icons and personal API keys. Organisations add collections, password sharing, member roles, groups, event logs, admin password reset, a directory connector and policies.

Two-factor login and administration
Accounts can be protected with authenticator apps, email codes, FIDO2 WebAuthn, YubiKey or Duo. Emergency access, an admin backend and a bundled web vault client complete the setup.

An independent, lightweight server
Vaultwarden is written in Rust and designed for deployments where running the official, resource-heavy service is not ideal. It is an independent project, not affiliated with Bitwarden, Inc., and is licensed under AGPL-3.0.

Where it fits
Use cases
- 01
Give the whole team a shared password vault
Create an organisation with collections for each client or system, add colleagues with suitable roles, and share logins without sending passwords in chat.
- 02
Replace a paid password manager on a small server
Run the Rust server on modest hardware and keep using the familiar Bitwarden apps on every device.
- 03
Plan for emergencies
Set up emergency access so a trusted person can reach critical logins, and use the admin backend to manage users and policies.
