What is Rybbit?

Rybbit shows how people find and use your website without setting cookies on their devices. It goes beyond basic traffic counts, with funnels, retention and session recordings that are often sold as separate product analytics tools. You can run it on your own server, where the data stays with you, or use the hosted service.

Rybbit is an open-source web and product analytics platform that tracks visitors without cookies. Besides the usual traffic metrics, it offers goals, funnels, user journeys, retention, error tracking, session replay and a real-time dashboard with location maps. It supports organisations with any number of sites and can be self-hosted with Docker.

Core capabilities

  • Tracks sessions, unique users, pageviews and bounce rate without cookies.
  • Builds goals and funnels from pages, custom events, clicks and form submissions.
  • Session replay shows anonymised recordings with sensitive data masked.

Web analytics without cookies

Rybbit covers the core web metrics, including sessions, unique users, pageviews, bounce rate and session duration. It uses no cookies and tracks location at country, region and city level, with map views. The dashboard updates in real time and can be filtered across more than 15 dimensions. Custom events can carry JSON properties, and organisations can hold an unlimited number of sites.

Product analytics and replay

Goals and funnels can be built from page visits, custom events and automatically captured actions such as outbound links, button clicks, form submissions and copied text. User journeys show the paths visitors take, and retention groups users into cohorts by start date to show who comes back. Session replay records anonymised sessions and masks sensitive information. Error tracking captures JavaScript errors and unhandled promise rejections.

Self-host it under AGPL-3.0

The self-hosting guide asks for a server with Docker, at least 2 GB of RAM and a domain pointing to it, because tracking has to run over HTTPS. After cloning the repository, running ./setup.sh with your domain writes the configuration and starts the containers, with Caddy obtaining the certificate. You then create the admin account at /signup. Rybbit is released under the AGPL-3.0 licence, and a paid hosted cloud version is also offered.

Where it fits

Use cases

  1. 01

Add privacy-friendly analytics to a website

Add a site in Rybbit and place the script tag it gives you in the head of every page, pointing at your own instance when self-hosting. Site settings control options such as single-page app navigation, outbound link tracking and error tracking. Results appear on a real-time dashboard that can be filtered across more than 15 dimensions.

  2. 02

Find where visitors drop out of a sign-up flow

Click Create Funnel and add two or more steps, such as a page path, a custom event or a button click. Rybbit shows how many users reach each step and lets you drill into the sessions where they drop off. User journeys then show the paths people actually take through the site.

  3. 03

See what a user did before a problem

Turn on Session Replay in the site settings, and the tracking script picks up the change without code edits. Recordings show mouse movements, clicks, scrolling and page navigation, with personal data in forms masked. Error tracking captures JavaScript errors, so you can match a reported bug to what the user saw.
