What is Redmine?
Redmine is a self-hosted project management and issue tracking application that has been developed since 2006. One installation holds many projects, each with its own members, roles, issue tracker, wiki, forums and files, which makes it a fit for teams that want one tool for tickets, schedules and documentation on their own server.
Redmine is a long-running open-source project management web application built on Ruby on Rails. It combines issue tracking with custom workflows, Gantt charts and calendars, time tracking, a wiki and forums per project, and links to Git or Subversion repositories. Teams run it on their own server with MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server or SQLite.
Core capabilities
- Define your own issue types, statuses and workflows per role, set from the admin screens.
- See schedules as Gantt charts and calendars built from issue start and due dates.
- Log time per project or issue and report it by user, issue type, category or activity.
Issues, workflows and schedules
Administrators define trackers (issue types), statuses and the allowed workflow transitions for each role. Custom fields in text, date, number, boolean, list and checkbox formats can be added to issues, time entries, projects and users, and used as filters. Gantt charts and calendars are built from issue dates, and time can be logged against issues and reported by user, issue type, category or activity.

Wiki, forums, email and repositories
Each project can have a wiki, forums, news and shared files, and modules can be switched on or off per project. Activity, issues and changes are available as Atom feeds and email notifications, and incoming email can create issues or add notes. Git, Subversion, Mercurial, Bazaar and CVS repositories can be browsed from the project. Sign-in can use several LDAP directories, and the interface is translated into dozens of languages.

Self-hosting and licence
Redmine is released under the GNU GPL version 2 or any later version. It needs Ruby and a database: MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, or SQLite for small single-user setups. Installation means unpacking a release, configuring the database, installing gems with Bundler, running the migrations and loading the default data, then signing in as admin. ImageMagick, Ghostscript and Pandoc are optional extras for thumbnails and document previews.

Where it fits
Use cases
- 01
Run a support or bug queue from email
Point Redmine at a mailbox over IMAP or POP3, or pipe mail to its mail handler, so each incoming email becomes an issue in the right project. Replies that reference the issue number are added as notes.
- 02
Track client projects and billable hours
Create a project or subproject per client, give each person a role on it and enable the time tracking module. Staff log hours against issues, and the time reports break them down by user and activity.
- 03
Connect tickets to code changes
Attach a Git or Subversion repository to a project and browse its files, changesets, diffs and annotate views inside Redmine. Changesets can be viewed and searched from within the project.
