What is PdfCraft?
The strongest current workflow starts with an existing PDF: inspect and search its pages, rotate or reorder them, add comments or fill fields, then save a revised copy. The Rust engine is also exposed through a command-line tool, but the project still describes the deeper editing and compliance-oriented parts of the PDF format as work in progress.
PdfCraft is an early-alpha, open-source PDF workbench for reading, searching, annotating, and reorganizing documents on desktop systems or through a WebAssembly build. It can combine and split files, work with forms, and apply password protection without requiring an account or cloud processing. Editing existing text and some advanced document standards remain incomplete.
Core capabilities
- Read PDFs with bookmarks, page thumbnails, selectable text, and document search.
- Rotate, insert, remove, reorder, combine, extract, or split pages with undo.
- Add comments, fill supported forms, and inspect document security settings.
Read and rearrange existing documents
PdfCraft provides search, selectable text, bookmarks, page labels, and several reading layouts. Its page organizer supports rotating, deleting, inserting, and moving pages; combine, extract, and split operations handle larger document sets. Undo and incremental saves help revise the structure without starting over.

Treat advanced editing as unfinished
The repository calls PdfCraft young software: reliable changes to existing text, OCR beyond Latin script, Office-file interchange, long-term signature validation, PDF/A/X/UA preflight, XFA forms, and broader localization are still limited or missing. Its own testing notes also acknowledge failures on hostile PDFs, so important files need independent review after editing.

Use cases
- 01
Assemble a document packet
Open several PDFs, extract or insert relevant pages, put them in order, rotate misoriented pages, and save a combined file. Check the resulting links and forms on important documents.
- 02
Review a long PDF
Use bookmarks and page thumbnails to navigate, search for a phrase, then leave comments or markup where a teammate needs to respond.
- 03
Prepare a form for return
Inspect the fields of a supported form, fill required values, review the rendered appearances, and save a copy. Advanced signing and validation needs should be checked against the current release.
Handle common review and form tasks locally
The current workbench includes comments, form filling and authoring, password handling, and basic signature tools. Its desktop workflow does not require an ArtCraft account or hosted document processing. A command-line interface exposes inspection and page operations for scripts, while the same Rust engine underlies the app.
