What is Open Source Point of Sale?

Open Source Point of Sale gives a small retailer or restaurant a full register and back office that runs in a web browser. It covers checkout, stock, customers, suppliers, taxes and reporting, and it can be installed on your own server, a cloud machine or even a Raspberry Pi.

Open Source Point of Sale is a web-based till and back-office system for shops and restaurants. It runs the sales register, tracks stock and supplier deliveries, handles taxes, gift cards and loyalty rewards, and prints or emails receipts, invoices and quotes. It is a PHP application with a MySQL or MariaDB database.

Core capabilities

  • Sell from a browser-based register and print or email receipts, invoices and quotations.
  • Track stock, item kits and supplier receivings, with barcodes generated and printed in the app.
  • Report on sales, expenses and inventory, with per-user permissions and a daily cash-up.

Checkout, stock and customers

The sales register logs every transaction and prints or emails receipts, invoices and quotations. Items and item kits carry an extensible list of attributes, and barcodes can be generated and printed. Receivings record stock from suppliers, and expenses can be logged alongside sales. Taxes cover VAT, GST, customer-specific and multi-tier rates. Gift cards, reward points and restaurant tables are built in, and the interface is translated into many languages.

Reports, staff access and marketing links

Reports cover sales, orders, expenses, inventory status and more, and the cash-up function helps reconcile the till at the end of a shift. Each staff account gets its own permissions, and an optional Google reCAPTCHA protects the login page. Customers and suppliers sit in their own databases, and the system can send SMS messages and sync with MailChimp. The look can be switched between Bootswatch themes.

Running it yourself and the licence

Version 3.4 is built on CodeIgniter 4 and needs PHP 8.2 or newer, MySQL 5.7 or MariaDB 10, and Apache 2.4 or nginx. You upload a release, point the .env file at the database and the schema is created on first visit. An installer script sets up Apache, MariaDB, PHP and HTTPS on an Ubuntu server, and a Docker setup with nginx and Let's Encrypt is also provided. The licence is MIT with one added condition: the opensourcepos.org footer must stay visible and unchanged on every page.

Where it fits

Use cases

  1. 01

Run the till in a small shop

Add items with prices, taxes and barcodes, print the labels, then scan them into the sales register at checkout. Print or email the receipt, and close the day with the cash-up function.

  2. 02

    Keep stock levels right

Record deliveries from suppliers as receivings so stock goes up, and group items into kits for bundles. Use the inventory reports to see what is running low before it sells out.

  3. 03

Quote, invoice and reward regular customers

Keep a customer database, raise a quotation and turn the sale into an invoice when the customer agrees. Issue gift cards and reward points, and send updates by SMS or through the MailChimp integration.
