What is Odoo?
Odoo is built as separate apps that share one database. You start with the ones you need, such as CRM, Sales and Invoicing, and add Inventory, Purchase, Manufacturing, Website or Project later. The Community edition is open source and you can run it on your own server.
Odoo is a suite of web-based business apps. The Community edition includes CRM, Sales, Invoicing, Inventory, Purchase, Manufacturing, Website, eCommerce, Point of Sale and Project. You install only the apps you need on your own server, backed by PostgreSQL.
Core capabilities
- Install only the apps you need, such as CRM, Sales, Inventory, Purchase or Project.
- Run quotes, invoices, stock moves, purchase orders and manufacturing orders in one system.
- Self-host with Linux packages or from source on PostgreSQL 13 or newer, under the LGPL.
Start with one app, add the rest later
Each Odoo app can be used on its own, and they work together when several are installed. The Community edition covers CRM, Sales, Invoicing, Inventory, Purchase, Manufacturing, Maintenance, Website Builder, eCommerce, Point of Sale, Project, Timesheet, Employees, Recruitment, Time Off, Email Marketing, Events and Surveys. A sales order can lead to a delivery and an invoice without re-entering anything.

What Community includes and what it does not
Odoo comes in two editions: Community (open source) and Enterprise (licensed), built on top of Community. Community has Invoicing but not the full Accounting app. Studio, Helpdesk, Planning, Field Service, Marketing Automation, Payroll, Subscriptions, Documents, Sign, Knowledge, barcode scanning in Inventory and the mobile apps are Enterprise only. Check the editions page before you plan around a feature.

Self-host it and know the licence
Odoo needs PostgreSQL 13 or newer and Python 3.10 or newer when run from source. Community installs from the project's Debian, Ubuntu or Fedora repository or packages, or from the GitHub source with odoo-bin. Windows installers are offered for testing, not production. The code is licensed under LGPL v3. Enterprise add-ons live in a separate repository and need a paid subscription.

Where it fits
Use cases
- 01
Take a lead through to an invoice
Log leads in CRM and move them through your pipeline. When a deal is won, create a quotation in Sales, confirm it, and issue the customer invoice from the order in Invoicing.
- 02
Keep stock and supplier orders in step
Set up products in Inventory and record receipts and deliveries as they happen. Raise purchase orders in Purchase for your suppliers and receive the goods against the order.
- 03
Sell online and in a shop
Build your site with the Website app and add eCommerce to list products and take orders. Use Point of Sale at the counter, with both channels drawing on the same products and stock.
