What is Memos?

Memos is a place to jot down thoughts as they come, without deciding first where they belong. Notes land in a timeline by date, and tags pull related notes together later. It runs on your own server, so your notes stay with you and you decide what anyone else can see.

Memos is a self-hosted note-taking app that keeps short and long notes in a personal timeline. Notes use Markdown, tags link related thoughts across days, and saved Views reuse search filters. Each memo has its own audience, so it can stay private, go to people you choose or be published on the web, and shared Spaces let several people write together.

Core capabilities

  • Markdown notes in a dated timeline, with tags and saved filter Views.
  • Choose for each memo whether it stays private, is shared or is public.
  • Runs from one Docker container with SQLite, MySQL or PostgreSQL.

A timeline of everyday notes

A memo can be one sentence or a longer entry with Markdown headings, checklists, tables, code blocks and links. Memos appear in a timeline under the day they were written. Hashtags in the text become searchable tags that can be arranged in hierarchies, and Views save filter conditions for reuse. Older memos can be archived and restored later.

Sharing, Spaces and integrations

Each memo has its own audience, from private to shared with family and friends to public on the web, and share links are managed per memo. Spaces bring members and memos together, with comments, reactions and mentions collected in an Inbox. Images and files can be attached, and an attachment library shows unused uploads. Webhooks, the API and an MCP server connect Memos to scripts and AI tools, and memos and attachments can be exported as a ZIP file.

Run it yourself under MIT

The quick start runs the neosmemo/memos:stable Docker image on port 5230 with a data folder mounted, and the first account is created in the browser. With the default setup everything Memos keeps sits in that one folder, which makes backups simple. Docker Compose, Kubernetes and a plain binary are documented too, and the database can be SQLite, MySQL or PostgreSQL. Sign-in supports passwords, SSO providers and personal access tokens, and Memos is released under the MIT licence.

Use cases

  1. 01

    Keep a daily work log

Write a memo whenever something happens, from a single sentence to a longer Markdown entry with checklists and code blocks. Each memo stays on the day it was written, so the timeline becomes a record you can scroll back through. Add hashtags such as #meeting or #decision, then save a View that filters on them.

  2. 02

Share notes with family or a small team

Create a Space, invite members and assign memos to it. Set each memo's audience as well, because placing a memo in a Space does not by itself make it visible to members. Comments, reactions, mentions and Space invitations collect in each person's Inbox.

  3. 03

Capture web pages and chat messages

Install the Memos Web Clipper for Chrome or Firefox to save a page, a selection or an image as Markdown with a link to the source. Memogram, a Telegram bot, saves your messages and images to Memos. Your own scripts and AI tools can connect through the API or the MCP server with a personal access token.
