What is Matomo?
Matomo is a full web analytics platform that you install on your own server, so visitor data is stored in your own database rather than with an advertising company. It covers the reports most teams use in Google Analytics, from traffic sources to goals and online sales. Privacy settings such as cookie-free tracking help you collect data in line with your own policies.
Matomo On-Premise is a self-hosted web analytics platform built on PHP and MySQL or MariaDB. After installation you add a JavaScript tag to your pages and get reports on visits, goals, ecommerce, campaigns and events, plus a real-time visitor log. Privacy settings include IP anonymisation, consent options and tracking without cookies.
Core capabilities
- Reports on goals, ecommerce, campaigns, events, site search and custom dimensions.
- Includes Matomo Tag Manager for managing third-party tracking codes.
- Can force tracking without cookies for all sites from the privacy settings.
Reports and tracking
Matomo reports on visits, pages, referrers, devices and locations, with a real-time visitor log and map. Ecommerce tracking, goals, campaign tracking, events, site search and custom dimensions cover most marketing questions. The segment editor breaks down any report, and dashboards can be arranged by dragging widgets. Scheduled email reports and the Matomo Analytics API make the data available outside the interface.

Plugins, Tag Manager and privacy
Matomo is built from plugins, so features can be added or removed, and the standard download includes Matomo Tag Manager for third-party tracking codes. Privacy tools include IP anonymisation, consent options, deletion of specific visits and a setting to force tracking without cookies. A marketplace offers more plugins, and several well-known ones are paid premium plugins, such as Heatmap & Session Recording, Funnels, A/B Testing, Form Analytics and Custom Reports.

Run Matomo On-Premise under GPL-3.0
Matomo needs PHP 8.1 or newer and MySQL 8.0 or newer, or MariaDB 10.6 or newer, and does not depend on a particular operating system. You download the release, upload it to your web server and complete the browser-based installer, and an official Docker image is also available. Busier sites should run the auto-archiving cron task so reports are processed in the background. Matomo On-Premise is released under the GPL-3.0 licence, and Matomo Cloud is a separate paid hosted service.

Use cases
- 01
Move website analytics onto your own server
Download Matomo, upload it to a PHP web server with MySQL or MariaDB, and follow the web installer through the system check, database setup and superuser account. Add your first website and copy the JavaScript tracking tag into your pages. For sites with more than a few hundred visits a day, set up the auto-archiving cron task.
- 02
Track visitors without cookies
As a superuser, go to Administration, then Privacy, then Anonymize data, and tick Force tracking without cookies. The JavaScript tracker then stops using cookies, and Matomo ignores tracking cookies on the server side. The Matomo privacy guides also cover IP anonymisation and asking for consent.

Measure online sales and campaign results
Use ecommerce tracking to record orders and revenue, and define goals for actions such as sign-ups. Campaign tracking shows which links and adverts brought visitors in, and scheduled email reports send the numbers to your team. The segment editor lets you break any report down by visitor group.
