What is Logseq?

Logseq is a note-taking app built around an outline, where every line is a block you can link, tag and reuse. Daily journals let you write first and organise later, because links gather related notes on their own pages. Notes stay on your own device, and the newer database version adds structured tags and tables for people who want more order.

Logseq is a privacy-first outliner for notes, journals, tasks and personal knowledge. Every block and page can be linked, tagged and given properties, and tags with properties turn notes into tables you can sort and filter. The current 2.0 beta stores each graph in a local database, while the older Markdown version, now called Logseq OG, still receives maintenance fixes.

Core capabilities

  • Blocks and pages link with [[ ]] and show their linked references.
  • Tags with properties turn notes into editable tables and galleries.
  • Tasks, queries, flashcards and PDF annotation are built in.

The database version in Logseq 2.0

Logseq 2.0, still in beta, stores each graph in a SQLite database rather than in Markdown files. Tags can carry properties that every tagged node inherits, an idea other apps call supertags, and views show nodes as tables, lists or galleries. Graphs export as SQLite, EDN or standard Markdown, and the desktop app keeps the last 12 automatic backups. An optional MCP server and a command-line tool let AI apps and scripts work with a graph. The team warns that data loss is possible during the beta and recommends regular backups.

Install it, and what is paid

Download the desktop app for macOS, Windows or Linux from GitHub releases, or open the web app at app.logseq.com. Logseq OG, the file-based Markdown version, remains available as a separate app and receives security and dependency updates but no new features. Sync with real-time collaboration and Publish are paid features for Open Collective backers and sponsors, and the docs say both can also be self-hosted. Logseq is released under the AGPL-3.0 licence.

Where it fits

Use cases

  1. 01

Keep a daily journal that links to projects

Write in today's journal as an outline of blocks, and reference a project or person with [[ ]] as you go. Each referenced page lists its Linked References, so a project page gathers every journal entry that mentions it. Tag a block with #Task, or type /todo, to make it a task with Status, Priority, Deadline and Scheduled properties.

  2. 02

Build a simple database of people or companies

Create a tag such as #Person and give it tag properties like lastName and birthday. Every block or page tagged #Person then shows those properties, and the tag's page lists all tagged nodes in a table you can sort, filter and edit like a spreadsheet. Add further views as lists or galleries for other groupings.

  3. 03

    Study with flashcards

Tag blocks with #Card, or select several blocks and choose Make a flashcard. Open Flashcards in the left sidebar to review the cards that are due and rate each one on four levels. Logseq uses the FSRS spaced-repetition scheduler to set the next review date.
