What is Karakeep?
Karakeep gives you one place for the links, notes and images you want to keep. It fills in titles and previews, can store a full copy of each page, and makes everything searchable. Optional AI tagging keeps a growing collection in order without manual filing.
Karakeep, previously called Hoarder, is a self-hostable app for saving links, notes, images and PDFs. It fetches titles and preview images, can archive full pages and videos, and offers full text search. Optional AI tagging and summaries work with OpenAI or with local models through Ollama.
Core capabilities
- Saves links, notes, images and PDFs, with titles and previews fetched automatically.
- Tags and summarises content with OpenAI or local models through Ollama.
- Archives full pages and videos so saved content survives link rot.
Capture from anywhere and organise into lists
Karakeep stores links, simple notes, images and PDFs. Browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox and Safari and apps for iOS and Android make saving quick, and RSS feeds can add items automatically. Bookmarks can be sorted into lists, and a list can be shared with other users to collect content together. Importers bring in bookmarks from Chrome, Pocket, Linkwarden, Omnivore and Tab Session Manager, and floccus can keep browser bookmarks in sync.

Archiving, search and AI tagging
Karakeep crawls each link with a headless Chrome browser to fetch its title, description and image. Full page archives and video downloads are optional settings that protect against link rot. Full text and semantic search cover everything stored, and OCR extracts text from images. AI tagging and summaries need either an OpenAI API key or a local Ollama server, and a rule engine and REST API cover custom workflows.

Run it yourself under AGPL-3.0
The official install uses Docker Compose, with the Karakeep web app, a headless Chrome container for crawling and Meilisearch for search. You set NEXTAUTH_SECRET, MEILI_MASTER_KEY and NEXTAUTH_URL in a .env file, then open the app on port 3000. Single sign-on works with OIDC providers through the OAUTH_ settings, and DISABLE_SIGNUPS closes registration. Karakeep is released under the AGPL-3.0 licence, and Karakeep Cloud is a separate managed service with free and paid plans.

Use cases
- 01
Build a read-later list from your phone
Install the iOS or Android app, or the Chrome, Firefox or Safari extension, and share links to Karakeep as you browse. Karakeep fetches the title, description and image for each link. The mobile apps support offline reading, so saved items are there when you have time.
- 02
Keep copies of pages before they disappear
Set CRAWLER_FULL_PAGE_ARCHIVE to true so Karakeep stores a full local copy of each saved page, made with monolith. Set CRAWLER_VIDEO_DOWNLOAD to true to keep videos with yt-dlp. You can then mark highlights on the stored content and find it again with full text search.
- 03
Sort a large collection without tagging by hand
Add an OPENAI_API_KEY, or point OLLAMA_BASE_URL at a local Ollama server and set INFERENCE_TEXT_MODEL and INFERENCE_IMAGE_MODEL. Karakeep then tags new bookmarks from their content, and OCR pulls text out of saved images. Use the rule engine and bulk actions to file items into lists, and share a list with others to collect links together.
