What is Glance?

Glance puts the things you check every day, such as news feeds, videos, weather and market prices, on one page you host yourself. You choose the widgets and layout in a simple configuration file. It is small and quick to load, and the layout is designed to work on phones as well as desktops.

Glance is a lightweight self-hosted dashboard that gathers your feeds on one page. Widgets cover RSS feeds, Reddit, Hacker News, YouTube uploads, Twitch channels, weather, market prices, Docker container status and server stats. Pages, columns and widgets are set up in YAML files, and it runs as a single small binary or Docker container.

Core capabilities

  • Shows RSS, Reddit, Hacker News, YouTube, Twitch, weather and market widgets.
  • Checks sites, Docker containers, server stats and DNS blockers such as Pi-hole.
  • Ships as a single binary under 20 MB, with themes and custom CSS.

Widgets for feeds and services

Glance includes widgets for RSS, Reddit, Hacker News, Lobsters, YouTube videos, Twitch channels, weather, Yahoo Finance market prices, calendars, clocks and bookmarks. For self-hosters there are widgets for site monitoring, Docker containers, server stats, DNS blocker stats and software releases. The custom-api and extension widgets show data from other sources, and a separate community-widgets repository collects ready-made ones. A to-do widget keeps tasks in the browser's local storage.

Pages, layout and themes

Configuration lives in YAML files, where you define pages, columns of different sizes and the widgets in each. Changes to the config file take effect on save without a restart. Themes are set with a few colour values, and ready-made themes and custom CSS are available. Preconfigured pages, such as a personal start page, give you a starting point.

Run it yourself under AGPL-3.0

The recommended setup downloads a Docker Compose template with config files for the home page and theme, then starts it with docker compose up. Glance is also available as a single binary under 20 MB for several operating systems and architectures. Optional username and password login supports hashed passwords and blocks an IP address after five failed attempts within five minutes. Glance is licensed under AGPL-3.0.

Where it fits

Use cases

  1. 01

Read your news and feeds in one place

Add an rss widget with the feeds you follow, plus hacker-news, lobsters and reddit widgets for the communities you read. A videos widget lists new uploads from chosen YouTube channels. Use a group widget to show several widgets as tabs in one box, and separate pages to split topics.

  2. 02

Keep an eye on your home server

Add a monitor widget with your service URLs to see whether each is online and how fast it responds. The docker-containers widget shows container status, server-stats shows CPU, memory and disk use, and dns-stats reads figures from Pi-hole, AdGuard Home or Technitium. A releases widget lists new versions from GitHub, GitLab, Codeberg or Docker Hub.

  3. 03

Set up a personal start page

Copy the Startpage layout from the preconfigured pages, then add search, bookmarks, clock, calendar and weather widgets. Pick one of the published themes or set your own colours in the theme section. Add users with hashed passwords under the auth section to limit who can open the page.
