What is EffectCraft?

Start with a composition, add visual layers, and build movement in the timeline using keyframes and a graph editor. The same project can combine masking, blending, effects, cameras, and a render queue. EffectCraft saves its own readable project format and offers command-line automation, but cross-application project and plug-in compatibility should not be assumed.

EffectCraft is an early-alpha, open-source motion-graphics compositor built in Rust. It arranges footage, text, shapes, and nested compositions on a timeline, animates properties with keyframes or expressions, applies effects, and renders output. The maintainers say it is still developing and not yet dependable for client work.

Core capabilities

  • Animate text, shapes, footage, and nested compositions with timeline keyframes.
  • Combine masks, blend modes, effects, and camera or light layers in a composition.
  • Render through a queue or use the command-line tools for repeatable output.

Build movement from layers and keyframes

Compositions contain footage, solids, shapes, text, and nested compositions alongside nulls, adjustment layers, cameras, and lights. The timeline supports several keyframe interpolation modes and graph editing, so a designer can shape both the timing and the value of a transition rather than relying only on presets.

Combine effects, then render a result

Masks, track mattes, blending, color tools, and other effects can be stacked within a composition. The render queue and command-line tool provide paths to video or image-sequence output, and the project also documents Lottie interchange. Availability and fidelity vary by effect and output path while the compositor is still developing.

Expect gaps in project and platform compatibility

This early-alpha project does not open existing .aep or .aepx projects or run After Effects plug-ins. Its maintainers have not established render parity and say the macOS build is more tested than Windows or Linux, where basic interaction issues have been reported. Use it for exploration and reviewed output, not unverified client deliverables.

Use cases

  1. 01

    Create an animated title

Place text and shape layers in a composition, keyframe their position or opacity, tune the timing in the graph editor, and render a short title sequence.

  2. 02

    Build a layered visual effect

Stack footage and adjustment layers, isolate a region with a mask or matte, apply supported color or distortion effects, and preview the combined result.

  3. 03

    Prototype an automated render

Keep a project in EffectCraft's JSON format, change documented properties through its command-line interface, and render a version for review. Verify output visually before production use.
