What is DocuSeal?

DocuSeal lets a business send documents for signature from its own server instead of a hosted service. You prepare a PDF once, send it to the people who need to sign, and get back a signed file. Keeping it in-house means contracts and the personal data in them stay under your control.

DocuSeal is a platform for creating fillable PDF forms and collecting electronic signatures. A visual builder places signature, date, file, checkbox and other fields on a PDF, and one document can go to several signers by email. Completed documents are signed automatically as PDFs, and an API and webhooks connect signing to other systems.

Core capabilities

  • Visual builder places 12 field types, including signatures, on any PDF.
  • Sends one document to several signers by email and signs the final PDF.
  • Includes an API, webhooks and user management in the free edition.

Building forms and collecting signatures

The WYSIWYG builder adds fields to an existing PDF, with 12 field types including signature, date, file and checkbox. A document can have several submitters, each completing their own fields. Signing requests are sent by email over SMTP, and the signing pages are optimised for mobile devices. The interface is available in 7 languages and the signing page in 14.

Storage, verification and integrations

Completed documents get an automatic PDF eSignature, and DocuSeal can verify PDF signatures. Files can be stored on disk or in AWS S3, Google Cloud Storage or Azure. User management, the API and webhooks are part of the open-source edition. Reminders, SMS verification, bulk sending, conditional fields, SSO and embedded signing are part of the paid Pro plan.

Run it yourself under AGPL-3.0

Run the docuseal/docuseal Docker image on port 3000 with a data volume mounted, or use the provided docker-compose.yml, which adds PostgreSQL and Caddy for HTTPS on your own domain. The single container stores data in SQLite by default, and DATABASE_URL can point it at PostgreSQL or MySQL instead. One-click deploys are offered for Heroku, Railway, DigitalOcean and Render. DocuSeal is released under the AGPL-3.0 licence, with an added term that the DocuSeal attribution must stay in the user interface. A hosted cloud version is also available from DocuSeal.

Use cases

  1. 01

Turn a PDF contract into a signing form

Upload the PDF and use the visual form builder to place fields such as signature, date, file and checkbox where they belong. Save it as a template so the same contract can be sent again without rebuilding it. Signers can complete the form on a phone or a computer.

  2. 02

    Collect signatures from several people

Add more than one submitter to a template, such as a customer and a manager, and assign fields to each. DocuSeal sends the signing requests by email through your SMTP server. When everyone has finished, the completed PDF is signed automatically and its signature can be verified later.

  3. 03

Start signing from your own systems

Use the API to create signing requests from another application, such as a CRM or HR system. Webhooks tell that system when a document has been completed. Store the finished files on local disk or in AWS S3, Google Cloud Storage or Azure.
