What is Dawarich?

Dawarich gives you your own version of Google Timeline, a record of where you have been, kept on a server you control. It collects location points from your phone, imports years of existing history and turns them into maps, trips and statistics. Family members can also share their location with each other, and each person decides whether to take part.

Dawarich is a self-hostable web app that replaces Google Timeline (Google Location History). It records your location from phone apps such as its own iOS and Android apps, OwnTracks and Overland, imports existing history from Google Takeout, GPX and other sources, and shows it on an interactive map. It also builds trips, visit suggestions and statistics such as countries and cities visited.

Core capabilities

  • Imports history from Google Takeout, OwnTracks, GPX, Strava and photos.
  • Shows your history on a map as points, lines, a heatmap or fog of war.
  • Counts countries, cities, distance travelled and days spent in each country.

Tracking and importing location data

Location can be sent from the Dawarich apps for iOS and Android or from tools such as OwnTracks, Overland, GPSLogger, PhoneTrack and Home Assistant. Existing history can be imported from Google Takeout, OwnTracks .rec files, GPX, Foursquare Swarm, Strava, Immich and the EXIF data in photos. Imports are added from the Imports page, and reverse geocoding runs after each one. Data can be exported as GeoJSON or GPX.

Maps, trips and statistics

The map shows your history as points, lines between points, a heatmap or a fog of war layer. Places can be saved with a visit radius, and Visits, still in beta, suggests places you have been for you to confirm. Statistics count countries and cities visited, distance and time, broken down by year and month, and a days in country view shows how long you spent in each country. Trips show the route, distance and time between two dates, with photos from Immich or Photoprism when connected.

Run it yourself under AGPL-3.0

Dawarich runs with Docker Compose using the docker-compose.yml file from the repository, which starts the app, PostgreSQL and Redis and serves the app on port 3000. The docs recommend 2 GB of RAM or more on an AMD64 or ARM64 server, and a Synology guide is also available. The project is under active development, so it asks you to read the release notes and back up your data before each update. Dawarich is released under the AGPL-3.0 licence, and Dawarich Cloud is a separate paid hosted service.

Where it fits

Use cases

  1. 01

Move your Google Timeline history to your own server

Export your location history with Google Takeout or the Timeline export in the Google Maps app. In Dawarich, open Imports, create a new import and upload the files, choosing the source by hand for Records.json and Semantic Location History. Reverse geocoding runs after the import, and the points then appear on the map and in your statistics.

  2. 02

Record where you go each day

Install the Dawarich app for iOS or Android, or a supported tracker such as OwnTracks, Overland or GPSLogger, and point it at your Dawarich instance. Your points build up on the map, where you can switch between heatmap, points, lines and fog of war layers. Visits, still in beta, suggests places you have been for you to confirm or reject.

  3. 03

Keep a record of trips with photos

Create a trip between two points in time to see its route, distance and time spent, and add notes to it. Add credentials for Immich or Photoprism, and Dawarich imports geodata from your photos and shows the photos on the map and in the trip. Your data can be exported again as GeoJSON or GPX.
