What is Appwrite?

Appwrite bundles the backend services most apps need into one platform: user authentication, databases, file storage, serverless functions, frontend hosting, messaging and realtime events. Teams work through a web console and SDKs for web, mobile and server languages instead of building and maintaining these pieces themselves, and they can run it on their own servers or use Appwrite Cloud.

Appwrite is a backend platform that gives web and mobile apps user sign-in, databases, file storage, serverless functions, messaging and realtime events through one set of APIs. It runs on your own servers with Docker or as the managed Appwrite Cloud.

Core capabilities

  • Sign users in with email, SMS, OAuth providers, magic links or anonymous sessions.
  • Store data and files with access control, run serverless functions and host frontends.
  • Install on your own server with one Docker command, or on Kubernetes with the Helm chart.

One backend for sign-in, data and files

Appwrite Auth handles sign-in with email, SMS, OAuth providers, magic URLs and anonymous sessions. Databases hold app data, Storage keeps files with compression, encryption, image transformations and access control, and Realtime lets apps react to changes as they happen. Apps connect through REST, GraphQL or WebSocket APIs, with official SDKs for web, Flutter, Apple, Android, Node.js, Python, PHP, Go and other languages.

Run code, host frontends and send messages

Functions run server-side code in isolated runtimes and can be triggered by events in a project. Sites deploys static, server-rendered and client-rendered frontends from Git with previews. Messaging sends email, SMS and push notifications through one service. Coding agents can work with a self-hosted project through a local MCP server that connects with an API key.

Self-host it under the BSD 3-Clause licence

A single Docker command starts a web setup wizard that installs Appwrite with Docker Compose. The docs list a minimum of 2 CPU cores, 4 GB of RAM and 2 GB of swap. A Helm chart covers Kubernetes, and ready-made images exist for DigitalOcean, Akamai and AWS Marketplace. The code is released under the BSD 3-Clause licence with no separate enterprise folder. A self-hosted instance supports one organisation, and Appwrite Cloud is the managed option.

Where it fits

Use cases

  1. 01

Build the backend for a customer app

Create a project in the Appwrite console, switch on the sign-in methods you need and model your data in Appwrite Databases. Connect the app with the Web, Flutter, Apple or Android SDK, so the team does not have to build its own login and API.

  2. 02

    Let customers upload files safely

Create a storage bucket, set who may read and write its files, and let users upload documents or images from the app. Use the built-in image transformations to serve thumbnails and full-size pictures from the same file.

  3. 03

    Run code when something happens

Write a function in one of the supported runtimes and set it to run when events happen in your project. Use it to send a welcome email through Appwrite Messaging or to copy data into another system.
