What is Appsmith?
Appsmith is for teams that need internal software but do not want to build every screen from scratch. You assemble the interface from ready-made widgets, connect it to the systems that hold your data, and write JavaScript only for the parts that are specific to your business.
Appsmith is an open-source low-code platform for building internal tools such as admin panels, dashboards and approval apps. You lay out screens with drag-and-drop widgets, connect them to databases and APIs, and add JavaScript where the logic needs it.
Core capabilities
- Drag widgets such as tables, forms and charts onto a page and bind them to live data.
- Connect to databases, SaaS tools and any REST or GraphQL API, then add JavaScript where needed.
- Self-host with Docker or Kubernetes and keep app versions in Git.
Widgets on the front, your data behind
Apps are built from widgets such as Table, Form, JSON Form, Chart, Modal and Tabs. Datasources include PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Microsoft SQL Server, Snowflake, REST and GraphQL APIs, and services like Google Sheets, Slack, Stripe and Jira. Queries read or write that data, and widgets pick it up through bindings that refresh when something changes.

JavaScript for logic, Git for versions
Any widget property or query can hold a JavaScript expression, and JS Objects keep longer functions in one place for reuse. Apps can be connected to a Git repository on GitHub, GitLab, Azure or Bitbucket, with separate branches for development, staging and production.

Self-host on Docker or Kubernetes
The code is licensed under Apache 2.0. The community image is appsmith-ce on Docker Hub, run with Docker Compose, and there is a Helm chart for Kubernetes. The current install guides default to the appsmith-ee image, which is the commercial edition with a free plan, so choose the ce image if you want the open-source build.

Use cases
- 01
Replace a spreadsheet with an admin panel
Connect a PostgreSQL or MySQL database as a datasource, write queries to read and update rows, and bind them to a Table and a Form. Support staff can then edit customer records without touching the database.
- 02
Build an approval app for requests
Create a form that saves each request through a query, show pending items in a Table, and add Approve and Reject buttons that run an update query. Use JavaScript to check values or send a Slack message after each decision.
- 03
Show live numbers on a team dashboard
Pull data from a database or REST API, use Chart and Stats Box widgets to display it, and transform the results with JavaScript. Publish the app so the team opens one page instead of running reports by hand.
